Surface freshwater is the source of most of the water we drink. Join the network keeping rivers, lakes and reservoirs clean, flowing and alive.
Join the AllianceA science-led network dedicated to the protection and restoration of the world's surface water resources.
ClearWater Alliance works to protect surface water — rivers, lakes, reservoirs and wetlands — from pollution, over-abstraction and habitat loss, so that freshwater ecosystems and the communities that depend on them can thrive.
Founded in 2011, we have grown from a single river monitoring group into an international alliance of 86,000 volunteers, 2,400 monitoring sites and 180 partner organisations across 46 river basins.
Our approach combines open water-quality data, catchment-scale restoration and direct engagement with basin authorities, utilities and agricultural producers.

The programmes we run to keep surface freshwater clean, connected and resilient.
Reconnecting floodplains, replanting riparian buffers and removing obsolete barriers so that rivers can flow, filter and recover naturally.

Learn MoreEquipping local groups with low-cost sensors and open protocols, so that every river, lake and reservoir has someone watching its water quality.
Learn MoreSurface water is finite, shared and vulnerable. Adopt a river reach, host a monitoring site, or bring your organisation into the Alliance.
